Cooking Space

There are three cooking levels in this smoker offering a total cooking area of 1050 square inches.

About 18 inches in depth and 28 inches wide is the largest and deepest level at the bottom. In comparison to the 560 model, the 680 model has an additional 3 inches in depth and 6 inches in width.

The depth of the middle level is about 12 inches, and the depth of the top level is about 8 inches.

Charcoal Hopper

An 8-hour supply of charcoal can be stored in the hopper’s vertical position. An average load of 10 pounds of lump coal or 16 pounds of briquettes will fit in the hopper.

Masterbuilt made a design modification with the 1050 in that the hopper lid now opens to the rear rather than the side, and is no longer limited by the grill being open. As I already noted, this wasn’t a big problem, but something that made me pause and ponder why they constructed the 560 the way they did. For the newer model, I’m pleased to see that this adjustment has been made.

Food Capacity

Masterbuilt boasts that their 1050 model has a capacity of 7 racks of ribs at a time utilizing the included cooking grates. In addition, that works out to 17 chickens, 67 sausages, or 45 burgers per batch at the same time. That’s a lot of food to cook on a single grill.

Shelf on the Side

As in the previous model, the temperature control panel is located on the side shelf of this newer model. Unlike the 560, this new shelf is constructed out of stainless steel, and incorporates a fold-out storage box in the rear for the power line and 3 hooks on the side for hanging tools.

The stainless steel folding front shelf is a welcome addition to the 1050. When it comes to working at a grill or smoker, you can never have enough shelf space for trays, cutting boards, gloves, and the like.
